There are 2 major categories of social media link building, social bookmark and social news and commentary.

Social bookmark sites are simply repositories for users to store their bookmarks online, allowing user to access their bookmarks on any computer with internet access. Being community based, users can compare other user's bookmarks, finding people with common interests. People with common interests add each others bookmarks - in essence providing a vote for the bookmark. The more votes a site gains, the more popular it becomes, and the more links it receives.

The skill in social media link building is identifying content from a client site that is suitable for social media submission. Once identified, an appealing keyword rich title (the title is the link) needs to be created. In addition, a compelling keyword rich summary needs to be created that compels the reader to want to visit, view and vote for the entire article.
